Evansville was established in 1812 by Hugh McGary as a land purchase from the U.S. government. He hired General Robert M. Evans, an attorney for whom the city was ultimately named, to assist him in incorporating Evansville as a city. On January 27, 1847 Evansville was officially incorporated as a city.
Today there are over 160,000 people who live in Vanderburgh County with another 100,000+ in surrounding communities. While most of Indiana is on eastern time, Evansville is the only major city in the central time zone. Average temperatures range from 32 degrees in the winter to 78 degrees in the summer.
